Lift Up Carolinas has been serving children and families across the greater Charlotte community since 1992, when a group of dedicated volunteers came together with a shared vision: to meet real needs with hands-on, meaningful service. What began as a small, volunteer-led effort quickly grew into a dynamic organization built around impactful, community-driven programs. Today, Lift Up Carolinas (formerly Assistance League of Charlotte) continues that same mission with the same passion, people, and purpose—independently serving our region with a focus on local impact.

From the beginning, our work has centered on addressing the most urgent needs of children and families. Early initiatives focused on fighting food insecurity, providing clothing, and supporting students in school—priorities that still define our work today. Programs evolved over time to become the foundation of what we now offer through Check Hunger, Heart of the Home, Gear Up Carolinas, Mecklenburg County Teen Court, Scholarship, Outreach, and Community Awards. These programs collectively provide food, clothing, mentorship, and educational support to thousands of individuals each year, ensuring that children are better equipped to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

As the organization grew, so did its impact. Mecklenburg County Teen Court was established in the mid-1990s as an innovative diversion program where teens are judged by their peers, helping young people take accountability while avoiding a criminal record. At the same time, clothing and food programs expanded significantly, serving thousands of students annually through school partnerships and community collaborations. Over the years, additional initiatives such as book bag distributions, scholarships for graduating seniors, and outreach partnerships with other nonprofits have strengthened our ability to respond to evolving community needs.

A pivotal moment in our history came in 2001 with the opening of our first thrift shop. What started as a new fundraising effort quickly became the heart of our organization. Within its first year, the shop demonstrated strong potential, and as it expanded into a larger facility—now known as “The Center”—it transformed into a primary source of funding for our programs. The growth of the thrift shop allowed us to move away from large fundraising events and instead sustain and scale our programs through daily community support. Over time, it has grown into a thriving, volunteer-run operation that not only generates critical revenue but also serves as a hub for donations, recycling, and outreach.

With increased resources came expanded reach. By the late 2000s, Lift Up Carolinas was serving thousands of children annually through clothing, food distribution, and mentoring programs, while also providing tens of thousands of dollars in goods to partner nonprofits through Outreach. The thrift shop’s continued success enabled the organization to deepen its impact, ensuring that more families could be served with dignity and consistency.

Today, Lift Up Carolinas remains a volunteer-driven nonprofit committed to feeding, clothing, mentoring, and educating children and families across our community. While our name has changed, our mission has not. We continue to build on more than three decades of service, growing thoughtfully to meet today’s challenges while staying rooted in the values that started it all: compassion, community, and a belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed.
